LCD Cable or LCD

#1 Post by lithium726 » Tue Jun 23, 2009 11:34 am

Howdy,

A while ago I decided to turn on my old T23. I was greeted by a screen with backlight and picture, but not color. Since there's backlight (I can dim and brighten still) I figure the inverter is working but I'm not sure if the monochromic, dim display is due to the cable or the panel itself. Any ideas?

LCDs get its color via a color filter attached to the front glass of the LCD. The TFT cells' only job is to block light to a varying degree. It is impossible for you to lose the color filter.

When you say there is no color, are you saying it is missing Red, Green or Blue?

If you are missing all colors, you will have no picture.

If you are losing a single color, likelihood is a line is broken in the cable.

Well, I installed a 14.1" panel from a p3-era latitude and the picture came back just fine. There's something wrong with the panel, but I'm not sure what. I can see a picture, the backlight is on... but it's not very bright, it looks like all the colors are inverted almost.

FYI, there are no known matching LCDs from other brands.
(There is an Apple Powerbook G3 LCD that is pin compatible, and will work, but it is too thick to fit in a T2x lid).
By putting that Dell screen on your T23, you probably have connectors connected wrongly, OR the inverter doesn't work with that LCD, OR you may even have blown part of the GPU.
Best bet would be to try a new/used known good proper IBM LCD cable.

The Laptop did not work with an IBM panel and IBM screen.

The laptop DOES work with the Dell Panel (samsung), IBM cable and IBM inverter. All the pins line up, the power has exactly the same connector and the panel looks great & fits in the bezel. I guess we found a swappable panel.

Obviously if the connectors were different I wouldn't have even tried...

Pins lining up does not mean connections matching!
What is the exact Samsung P/N, please, and from which model Dell Latitude?
Samsung P/N should look like LT141xxxx or LTN141xxxx
