What is the maximum hard drive size for the T60?
What is the maximum hard drive size for the T60?
In the past I have encountered older computers that had BIOSes that wouldn't recognize more than a certain amount of hard drive space. Anyone know what the limit is for the T60?

No limit. You can run 500GB if you feel like it.

There shouldn't be a limit as far as I know. The limit for 32 bit based systems would be 2TB, but the biggest notebook drives right now are 500GB.

Wow, thanks for the great information!

XP's already in extended support, which means that free updates are security only.
So, as this isn't a security update, you won't see any update for XP that isn't for customers of their extended updates program. Which, last I heard, cost $20,000 to join.

Re: What is the maximum hard drive size for the T60?
from Information Week:
In an unprecedented move, Microsoft has committed to providing support services for its soon to be retired Windows XP through 2014 -- a full 13 years after the operating system was originally released.
In a letter sent to customers this week, Microsoft senior VP Bill Veghte said the software maker will provide security patches "and other critical updates" for Windows XP until April, 2014.
this is great news, since upgrading err... I mean downgrading to Vista (ugh!) or even Windows 7 essentially does nothing for my computing experience except enabling 64 bit support, but my T60p with a Core 2 Duo still cannot access all 4GB that is installed even under Windows 7, so what do I really gain with Windows 7, prettier yet slower windows ??
Thanks, but I am sticking to my speedy & optimized XP until about 2012 or so!

That's still extended support. IIRC, it was around 2011 that they were originally planning on pulling the plug entirely - you'd then get as much support for XP as you would for, say, Windows 3.1, from Microsoft.wild_bill wrote:from Information Week:

Massive usability improvements (the new start menu is really, really nice. And, a really nice trick... recently opened documents now follow applications in the OS, not just in the application itself, so you can get to recently opened documents from their taskbar icon, or in the start menu. And, you can even pin really frequently opened documents.)
Improved security architecture (combined with not being ridiculously annoying about it, unlike Vista - UAC prompts don't come up all the time, just when it makes sense.)
DX10 (not a HUGE deal right now, but some games will require it (and I think some do now))
If performance worries you, drop it to Windows Classic. Then it should be nearly as fast as XP. And I'm sure there's a lot more speed hiding in there, too.

Re: What is the maximum hard drive size for the T60?
I was just reading about the Ultrabay Slim, and some people said if you wanted to get a DVD burner, you have to make sure it is 9.5mm and also says Lenovo on it, otherwise the connector and/or faceplate may not fit into the T60.ajkula66 wrote:No limit. You can run 500GB if you feel like it.
What about hard drives then? If I want to replace the hard drive, can I assume any non-Lenovo branded WD, Seagate, or Hitachi hard drive will fit into the hard drive slot?

Yes, you can assume that. (It would also be a correct assumption to makethinkpac wrote:What about hard drives then? If I want to replace the hard drive, can I assume any non-Lenovo branded WD, Seagate, or Hitachi hard drive will fit into the hard drive slot?

Re: What is the maximum hard drive size for the T60?
However, it would be incorrect.
The WD VelociRaptor is 12.5mm, and won't fit - at least I don't think.
There may also be some server drives that are 12.5mm and don't fit. Also, avoid Extended Availabilty drives from Hitachi - they're server versions of their laptop drives, but aren't meant to handle power cycling, and don't have the low power modes of the normal laptop drives. They cost more anyway, though.
And, just to go all the way, it has to be SATA, not PATA or SAS.

Re: What is the maximum hard drive size for the T60?
Are you talking about trying to fit a hard drive into the normal hard drive slot, or using an adapter to fit it into the ultrabay slim slot? I just want it in the normal hard drive slot. I was looking at the WD Scorpio Black, Seagate Momentus, and Hitachi 7K320 drives.bhtooefr wrote:However, it would be incorrect.

I was talking about the normal slot. The stuff you're looking at is meant for laptops and will work fine, though.

Anyway, all of those drives will work just fine inside a T60. ("All" means one at a time. You can't fit all of them into a T60 at once

But on an Advanced Dock, you can have two of them in the T60, and one in the dock.
