#1 Post by taskeen21 » Wed Jun 24, 2009 6:00 pm

Hi All,

I need your help….Please…
I have an IBM Thinkpad R51 2887/AE3……..It’s a 4 years old laptop and is dead right now…….When i connect the power cord the battery LED flashes for 3 seconds and then stays on……however, pressing the power ON button does nothing……..absolutely dead….
The battery was dead from 6 months and i was running it on power supply…….with the battery in the laptop…..when i pull the power cable out, the laptop used to turn OFF immediately….
last week, it didn’t power ON even when the power cable was connected….i ordered a new battery - no use…….i removed the battery and tried connecting the power cable and starting the laptop - no use…….i removed HDD, CDD, RAM and tried starting - no use……….

could you please help me out???? thanks in advance..

Syed.

Troubleshooting a dead Thinkpad laptop is generally the same for every one. First, check for 16VDC output from the power brick with a multimeter. If that checks out, remove all internal cards (.e.g modem, WiFi, bluetooth) and all but one stick of RAM (reseat the other stick). Now try to power up, If the problem remains check all fuses on the systemboard with a multimeter and also check for loose parts. There are several threads for fuse locations on the forums if you do a search for them. Another trick is to remove all of the RAM then power up. If you do not get a series of beeps, there is a good chance the systemboard is dead or you have a blown fuse.
