i killed my 760e

my 760 had been working for several years on 98 se.i had to go and try to install w2k pro(a pirated version).well the install was a failure and i totally ruined my 760.i restarted the computer i figured i would try fdisk and reformat i got the message no fixed disks present.so i restarted and got error code#that i cant remember .i got out the 98 boot disk and got msgs "missing or corrupt COMMAND.COM and SYS C: however it did say diagnostic tools loaded successfully. so now i restart and get the dos screen of a floppy drive and disk F 1-12.i am assuming i have to restore all the oem stuff that i screwed up so i hae been all over the net looking for a system program service disk to download but every site i found had dead download links .can anyone tell me what i have to do and what i need to get the ol girl fixed?

A complete wipe of your hard drive and a new install of Windows and your computer should be fine again. Oh, and stick with Windows 95 or 98, Windows 2000 on computer that old will CRAWL most likely.

okay, how do i wipe the hd clean?and how do i install 98 i wont have cd-rom support eh?

Do you have an external floppy? If so, then this will be just like putting 98 on a desktop machine, boot from the floppy, load the CD rom then you're off. If you don't have an external floppy, it gets more complicated. First, boot from a boot disk and use FDISK to repartition your drive. Next, reboot and format the hard drive. Now, copy the DOS system files from the floppy to the c drive then try to find a CD driver you can put on the C drive so thatway, you can boot your computer from the hard drive in DOS, load the CD driver then install windows.

ive got a 98 setup disk.when i boot up i choose start computer with cd-rom support.it does the pci bus thing,then lists info about cd-rom drivers,continues with ramdrive version 3.06 virtual disk c:disk size:2048k,sector size:512 bytes,allocation unit 2 sectors, directory entries:64.however this is followed by error msg."the following file is missing or corrupt:COMMAND.COM type the name of the command interpreter (e.g c:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM) A> flashing cursor.
i tried putting the 98 cd in however the cd -rom turns on and spins up but nothing happens but a blank screen what should i do?

I found this while searching on the internet. It covers what you'll need to know to get your CD-ROM drive working under DOS so you'll be able to install Windows 98. Since the link to file file is broken on that page, I've also included a link to a website with a bunch of bootdisks you can use.

well if this ol computer was a ford i could figure it out,guess i will wait till i recieve ny hd's from alpha and just toss this 2gb.that sure would be eaiser

I never did consider this until I recieved the 760 you sent me and noticed it's the thin model without room for CD, but is yours the same of is your one of the ones with CD? I should have asked this at the beginning as it would be helpful to know, but it never did cross my mind.

mine has cd installed,i tried downloading dos files but all i got was invalid system disk its still asking for COMMAND.COM .i tried all the dos files on that site you posted none worked

Odd, the bootdisks should work. Oh well, lets just hope those hard drives arrive soon.

In the mean time, I'll see if I can figure something out because I know you can get Windows on that ThinkPad without the external floppy, I had to do that with my 760E. It's possible, it's just a pain in the butt to do.

alpha, ive got an external floppy and an internal cd rom .i went to the site you suggested and individually downloaded each version of dos to a:/ disk.then individually tried to install the dos and all i kept getting was "invalid system disk".i put the 98 ebd in and type in FDISK i get "no fixed disks present" so then i run SCANDISK /ALL i get"no errors found on drive c:.then i try FORMAT C: i get " invalid drive specification " i also was reciving on initial startup of the ebd "there is no valid fat format". ive tried various other command lines but i end up with "bad command. any ideas i really dont want to scrap this HD because i cant figure it out ( i hate the word cant ,its usually not in my vocabulary,cant means i havent tried hard enough yet)

ok as per my earlier post" i killed my 760e" i am having hd problems first i had a 2 gb hd that worked perfect till i tried to install w2k then it crashed and i got"no fixed disks present" so then i installed a 1gb hd with win 98 already installed i booted up and got the same msg.so i went to easy setup and fouund my hdd1 wasnt highlighted so i guess its not recogizing the hd cause easy setup said the system board is okay what can i do to fix it
