Rocketfish bluetooth adapter will not install....

#1 Post by Investinwaffles » Thu Jun 25, 2009 12:42 am

Ok, so i have a rocketfish bluetooth adapter that i bought off ebay (no install CD).

So, before I installed it, I DL'd the updated drivers (turns out they are broadcom drivers).
My X41 did not come with an internal bluetooth module, yet there is still a bluetooth icon in the control panel (when I clicked on it, it would just notify me that there was no bluetooth adapter installed).

So I tried to uninstall it in the device list but there is no actual device listed (it is just the ibm stack I guess?).

OK, so I launch the broadcom bluetooth installer, it says to plug in the bluetooth adapter, and then sits there for about a minute while windows attempts to automatically install. It correctly ID's the adapter as a rocketfish adapter but then a split second later it fails inexplicably and says that the device may not have installed properly and isnt working.
Then the broadcom installer says that It cant install the device and to re-start and try installing it again.

Im at my witts end with this thing. Is there anyone out there that can help me?!?!?!?! :(

EDIT:
I uninstall the rocketfish adapter in the device list before restarting and it is doing the same thing repeatedly.

please halps! :(
The installer keeps saying it cant properly read the information off the device, and to re-start my computer and try again. This **** problem is damaging my calm!!!

Look for the BT stack in the Program list, then uninstall it.

As sjthinkpader suggested you need to uninstall all previous installations of Bluetooth.
The one wrinkle I see is that your laptop probably has a bluetooth modem already installed,
which may or may not work, so Windows might try to load software for it even after you've
deleted it.
I'd open the rear cover and completely remove the modem (the smaller of the 2 cards)
unhook the single wire and try again.

The modem does not have bluetooth in it. I removed it anyway, and uninstalled everything bluetooth related that I could but no dice :(

Any other ideas? Device manager identifies it properly (as the rocketfish bluetooth adapter), but there are no drivers installed for it and the broadcom program refuses to see the adapter

Any other ideas?

You need to turn it on by some means.

The driver is in the USB device. When you had it plug in, look for it in the USB list under Device Manager. Then remove it there. After that unplug the physical USB/BT device.

Then with the machine running, plug in the device and Windows will load the BT stack. If a BT icon shows up in the SysTray, right click on it and see if there is a power ON option.

It may show up in the Fn-F5 list also.

Or...Instead of putting yourself through all this, just get an X41 bluetooth modem from eBay,
they're only about $20 and you'll be good to go.

I forgot to mention to look under the Network settings in BIOS and disable the onboard bluetooth.
Unless you decide to get hold of the correct bluetooth modem.

Dont i need a special antenna (that runs up near the wifi antenna) to use w/ the internal bluetooth module?

I will try different settings with the one I have now and see if i can somehow get it to install properly :?

Ok, I got it working.

It was the bluetooth option turned on in the bios. I think the installer was trying to read an internal bluetooth device.

And this rocketfish adapter works really well. Good enough distance, and it only sticks out a hair from the indent near the power port.

I have one of these USB BT device in my X20 and it took a while to get it working too. Great thing about these newer devices is that the driver is in the device, no CD to lose. My old USB BT stick is sitting useless after I misplaced the driver CD.

You cant find drivers online? Thats a bummer. It seems as if the drivers are installed in the device, but it took an updated bluetooth stack to get it working.

I love this adapter. It fits nearly flush with the side of my laptop (sitting in the indented part on the side), and works perfectly with my phone and mouse. Plus now I dont need to carry around an unwieldy adapter for my mouse (when I used a simple RF mouse). The only thing that I dont like is that it has a flashing blue light in the adapter (kind of annoying to me).

The internal modem/bluetooth combo would deff. be sleeker but it is nearly 4 times the cost of this little adapter (I paid $4.95 for mine with free shipping). Gotta love ebay
The built in modem is useless to me, so im going to keep it out of the computer. I am really considering installing a "rubber duck" antenna into the phone-jack for a little increased wifi access (but at the same time, the jack needs to sit flush so I can slip it in my notebook sleeve and have nothing catch.
