T42p Crashes - need video driver update

#1 Post by Mattman33 » Thu Jun 25, 2009 3:28 pm

Hello,
when I use Premiere Pro 2, my Thinkpad gives me the blue screen, when I scroll through video sequences.

I checked out the "STOP: ..." Code - it tells that something is wrong with the graphic card. (ATI Fire GL T2). So I thought, it should be nice to update the video card driver (using Windows XP, SP3).

I checked for updates on the ATI website, but no one works for my Thinkpad. And the last video card driver-update of the Lenovo support page is from 2007. And that is the one, that is alrready installed on my Thinkpad and crashes at Premiere. Can please somebody tell me, how this problem could be solved?

Thanks in advance and best regards,

Matt

Welcome to the forum!

Chances are that the problem is not the driver, but a failing graphic card/motherboard. I've seen this on T4x/R5x machines with ATi graphics more than once.

Does your T42p freeze out of the blue on ocassion, or loses display, apart from bluescreening?

Hi ajkula66,

thanks for your hint. I am 100% sure, that there is a graphic card inside. The original Lenovo driver racognizes the hardware and I run the card on 1600 x 1200 with no problem. The problems just occure, when I use Premiere or After Effects. And there is mostly the bluescreen with the message "Physical memory dump ..." - from time to time there is a black screen instead of the blue one.

I tried to run the computer with almost minimum hardware aceleration (at the troubleshoting menue on the second Level), and it seemed to be more stabile - at least I could edit for one hour and everything workd fine.

Could it be, that the graphic card is damaged?

Regards,

Matt

It's possible that your graphics chip is failing and that these two software programs "bring out the worst" for some reason (eg heat). Did the programs ever work without blue screeing or have they always done this? Try a 3d stress test program and see if you have the same problem.

In my experience, you are looking at a failing card. May I be wrong for your sake...
