t42 memory question..

I have a T42, (2373K5U) with 512 MB RAM. I just bought a 512 MB Kingston PC2100 266 MHz stick. The parts list for my laptop on the IBM website mentioned that it had a PC2100 stick, but when I checked it with SiSoftware Sandra (benchmarking/system info application), it showed that the IBM installed RAM is a PC2700.

Would this different speeds in memory cause performance degradation? I had put in the new RAM and it seems to be working fine, but want to confirm..

They're both now running at PC2100. The PC2700 can't run the PC2100 faster, so the slower one drags the faster down to its level.

Replace the new stick with the correct (PC2700) memory.

Yep, will do that. The darn documents on the IBM site about my machine is wrong. Anyways, did a search on the forum and realize that the slower one is going to get the performance of the machine down.

Yes, I also had this problem, I now have 786mb (256 + 512) but it was a little problem, IBM posted on their site I had PC 2100 ram, but I really do have PC 2700 ram. Sisoft says so, and the performance is a little bit higer too. So shame on IBM

Anyway, glad you found out. Now I am certain its IBM's fault.
