t43 clock battery replacement help

#1 Post by j king » Sun Jun 28, 2009 2:49 pm

Hi all.

I am a non computer guy. I have a T43 . My clock started to loose time so I bought a clock battery for it."I know its not the correct name."
I spent hours trying to find how to install it and now am half afraid to try after reading about losing settings or whatever.Am I capable and if so where is it at? I took the one cover off the bottom and removed a card but it wasnt there.
I live in the boonies so getting it serviced will be a pain. Thanks Jim

Take a look at the T43 Hardware Maintenance Manual (page 111) for location and directions for removal.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

The 'Clock' battery you're referring to is actually called the CMOS battery and should look like this.

They are readily available via eBay by typing "thinkpad T43 cmos battery", and typically you'll find one from here.
It's not worth buying a round cell, peeling back and refitting the insulation, and removing and resoldering the wires.

Regarding fitting one, it's actually quite easy. If you have a 14" T43, refer to this diagram on stripping and rebuilding a T4x.
Referring to the diagram, page 1 sections 1 & 2, remove the keyboard and front palm rest screws
Then remove the keyboard.
There's no need to disconnect the keyboard connector, and prop it against the screen.
Remove the palmrest by just lifting it off. If you've never removed it before it can be a little 'sticky' along its front edge.
You'll see the yellow CMOS battery stuck to a piece of plastic, as in page 3, section 6 Ultrabay assembly.

The CMOS battery is stuck to the plastic, so gently pull it off.
Trace the wires to the connector under the battery on the motherboard, and grasping the connector gently disconnect the battery.

Refit the new battery and position it on the plastic. I tend not to replace the sticky pad, but if you can remove it then all well and good.

Reassembly is reverse of assembly.

Fire up the T43 and immediately press F1 key to access the BIOS screens and correct the clock time. F10 to save and exit.
