How to get rid of this??
How to get rid of this??
Hello there!
It's a small problem, but it's quite annoying. When I plug in my digital camera (Canon Powershot G3) the autoplay window pops up and it suggests me to view the photos with programs I uninstalled long ago for example Canon's software (which I don't need in XP) or the silly Google's Picasa (I'll always regret installing this).
How can I get rid of this? I uninstalled the programs via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. It's probably stuck somewhere in the registry but I can't find it.
Another thing: what system utilities or tweaking tools do you use and if? What would you recommend?
Thank you thank you.
Petra

Let's see......
You can try this....
1. Go to Start->Run->gpedit.msc
2. Computer Config -> Administrative Template -> System
3. Double clik Turn off Autoplay
4. Enable it.
Or
1. Go to Windows Explorer->Tools->Folder Options
2. Click on File Types
3. Scroll down to the file extension you need (JPG or JPEG)
4. Under the "Details for XXX extension" , click the "Change" button next to the "Opens with....."
5. Uncheck the "Always use the selected program to open files of this type" at the bottom of the windows which pops up.
OK your way out.

System Cleaners I use are...
CCleaner...
http://www.ccleaner.com/
and
EasyCleaner
http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm
I used TweakUI once but lost my Regional Settings option in Control Panel, Search option and Windows Help and Support. Speaks volumes about my skills, doesn't it?
Advise that you use CCleaner/ EasyCleaner to check registry. Both support undo options (EasyCleaner upto 10 levels by default), which is pretty helpful in case you did something you didn't intend to!!!
Also check the file extensions corresponding to those from your camera in Windows Explorer to see which program is associated to open them. If the associated program is either Canon software/Picassa, change it to default, like the Windows Fax and Picture Viewer.

Thank you both.
I downloaded Tweak UI. Nice little thing! Had no idea. Anyway, the dodgy ghost programs are not among the handlers in autoplay. Scanner and camera wizard is, the others are not.
The photo file extensions are currently associated with ACDSee.
I have EasyCleaner but it scares me to delete all the 500 entries it finds at once so I rather go and check it one by one (very long and tiring). I'll do that and see if anything changes.
Thanks,
Petra
