Replacing The Fan And Getting Ripped Off

#1 Post by maatghandi » Wed Jul 01, 2009 9:36 am

Hi all,

I ordered a replacement fan for my T60 model 6371-CTO through memory4less.net. I specifically ordered part number 41W6408 as stated on the lenovo website. I just received it today and they shipped me a different part, number 41V9931, which it turns out is less than half the price of the one I ordered.

What I'm wondering is can I use the part I was shipped and ask for the difference in price back from the company, or should I use the lenovo listed part and go through the hassle of returning this part and getting the one I ordered? The two parts look the same on the surface. I haven't tried installing it yet to see if it fits but it might not be the right size or it might be rated for different currents and/or voltages.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
Maat

P.S. The part I was shipped looks used too. I can't seem to find anything on the internet that states explicitly that they have a new fan. Is it just not possible to find a new part or am I looking in the wrong places?

It's up to you as to what to do with the online retailer, but if you want a new fan (FRU 41W6408) it is definately available from IBM parts for $65.69 plus tax/shipping.

If the new fan Harryc found is available I would go with that one. I tried IBM and couldn't seem to order one from them for my T60p. I went with www.ThermalFX.com and had a great experience. Order shipped same day with next day delivery as requested. The fan installed fine and has been working great for about two weeks now. Their fans are reconditioned. If you want a new one then go with the IBM.

41V9931 is the later heatsink for a 4:3 T60 with integrated graphics, and won't fit. You need 41W6408, that's the only compatible part.

Thanks that is very helpful bhtooefr. I think I will go with ordering through lenovo. Funny I couldn't find my way on how to purchase parts from them, only accessories. Thanks for the link Harryc. Indeed I think the hardest part will be dealing with memory4less.net.

Thanks all for your help,
Maat

Hmm, i'm wondering if this price is actually right or not. In the replacement part stores for Norway/Denmark/Sweden 41W6408, when converted to USD costs $21.58 excl. VAT/shipping. Including $12 for shipping and 25% VAT it becomes $41.31. :o
Nonetheless, quite interesting to find something which is more inexpensive here compared to the US.

Their US parts do tend to be rather expensive.

Maat-
"Indeed I think the hardest part will be dealing with memory4less.net."
Did you pay with credit card, and have that shipped here in the US?

If so, contact the merchant and tell them "You did not send what I ordered. Send a pickup slip for it if you want it back, I am calling the credit card company to charge back the order." Either they send the slip and issue a refund, or you say goodbye.

Then you call the credit card company (who may require you to send them a letter) and you keep it simple. The merchant did not send what you ordered, they sent the wrong goods and you cannot use them. You ordered new goods and you think they sent used goods, too. You asked them to send a pickup slip (call slip) and make a refund, they refused. Please issue a "chargeback" against the merchant and refund your charge.

At that point they usually say yes, issue a temporary credit, try to contact the merchant and in 30 days the credit is permanent.

There are state and federal warranty statutes and rights that cover these problems but the simplest thing is to just stick to the minimal facts and get the credit. Then hold the parts that you did not order for 30 days from the time you notified the merchant (to give the sender time to pick them up) and after that, typically your responsibility ends and you can throw them out.

I'm not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. I'm just a consumer who uses his teeth to bite back once in a while.
