adding a new partition

#1 Post by davidlg16 » Fri Feb 04, 2005 1:36 pm

Just received T42 2378FVU

Can anyone tell me how can I add an extra partition to my just received T42?

I would like to keep the hidden partition, and keep the Access IBM progs in my Start menu.

If I Fdisk, format, and install XP using my XP CD, will the "Access IBM" menus still appear in my Start menu? or is that only with the restore disks. I understand Access IBM features are still there, but I want it on my start menus w/o having to add them one by one.

Thanks
David

P.S. fixed my Thai flexing keyboard, but my palmrest is still flexing, dont really wanna switch to the non-touchpad version...
got the sanyo jiggling battery, can I call IBM to swap to the Sony battery anytime within my warranty or must be within the first 30 days?
my hd have a clicking sound, kinda annoying :(

I would like to keep the hidden partition, keep the original IBM programs (batter maximiser, and some other lil ones).

1. VERY IMPORTANT: create your set of recovery CDs/DVDs before changing the partitions.
2. You can create additional partitions with programs like partition magic or acronis partition expert- without loosing data.
3. fdisk, format,WinXP CD etc is possible, check
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 216236fdce
but it is much easier to use e.g. partition magic- you keep the "access IBM"/F11 functionality.

David,

I just got a new T42 and I was in a similar situation. I used PartitionMagic to cut the first primary partition into two separate ones. PM can cleanly relocate everything; you do not need to reinstall Win XP or any of the preloaded programs. This is way faster and easier than a complete reinstall. Making a backup before you attempt any repartitioning operation is a very good idea, though.

My problem was that I couldn't access the IBM restore partition though the BIOS after the repartioning. Repairing the MBR solved that problem. See http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=7661 for details. Thanks again to Zeitgeist for the help!
