can a LED backlight be used in place of a ccfl during replacement? i was just reading today flourescent light is harmful for eyes.

No. Different technique and different LCD construction.

Only if the LED replacement has the same form-factor as the original CCFL. As that probably will not be true (I've never seen what/how the LEDs are arranged in such a display), then a physical swap would not be possible. Even if somebody were to effectively duplicate the narrow diameter of the CCFL with an LED string, you will still have the problem of powering those LEDs. The existing inverter, I would think, could never be used since it's designed to output several hundred volts, in a precise manner which first allows the CCFL to "ignite" and then maintain the glow; not the steady 5 to 12V DC that an LED might require. That would mean an electrical modification to the existing power system which drives the CCFL.

As far as fluorescent lighting (FL) being bad for your eyes, I believe that there's a certain amount of ultraviolet (UV) rays that can be thrown off from them, but I'm not aware of any "normal" bulb that would fall into a harmful range. Tanning lights, for example, are designed to emit UV and are a form of FL. Most people are affected by FL from the flickering that can occur, which causes eye strain (but probably no long-lasting damage), headaches, and in rare cases, seizures.

thanks for the replies guys im just waiting for my thinkpad motherboard to clear customs just cant wait to go back on the 14inch sxga. this piece of %^&* 22 inch lcd is bright it hurts my eyes really really bad even with win7 high contrast on and picture reduced to 16 inch diagonal with low resolution (1152x864 instead of 1680x1050) and brightness set to 0. i dont mind the non native resolution as long as the brightness is strictly restricted on this panel.

its a new benq. i suspect its the ccfl of this LCD or something in it which compresses the eyes really bad.

comeback thinkpad quick from customs!! so i can dump this lcd back to the dealer.
