Can't get replacement drive to boot in T42

#1 Post by Dave_NY » Fri Jul 10, 2009 5:13 pm

I recently bought a used T42 (type 2373) to replace one that was lost and wanted to load a saved image (made using using Acronis TrueImage 11 Home) from my old system onto it. I bought a new hard drive (Seagate ST980815A) and copied the image to it, but it won't boot. After the IBM Thinkpad logo screen, I get a blank screen and cursor and nothing happens. I thought there might be a problem with the image, so I tried cloning the drive that came with the T42 (Fujitsu MHT2040AH) using Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools to the Seagate and got the same result. Then to test for a drive compatability problem, I cloned the Fujitsu drive to another old Thinkpad drive (IBM IC25N040ATCS04-0) using Data Lifeguard and again got the same result. Am I doing something wrong, or could I possibly be seeing two drive incompatabilities :?:

You need to put the target drive (new drive) in the T42, and put the source drive in the external enclosure to do a clone or image operation..

When I install e.g. a fresh T23, I use Acronis to restore a saved T23 image from my Desktop's HD onto the laptop's HD, using a USB enclosure.
Then stick that HD in a T23, and it works 100% all the time.

I kind of have the opposite problem - I just replaced my drive and can boot into Windows fine, but I can't get into the GUI interface accessible via bootup (using the 'Access IBM' button). Is this a hard drive MBR issue, or is that GUI stored in the BIOS? I'm not sure.

Try pressing F11 instead of the Access IBM button.

Not a 'How to or FAQ'. Moved to T4X forum.

F11 yields the same results as 'Access IBM' - button itself works fine (the "Push Access IBM" text disappears when the button is pushed).
