t42p and HD / MKV videos file playing

#1 Post by sergi0 » Sun Jul 12, 2009 4:27 pm

Hi folks,

I have a powerfull t42p with a 2ghz CPU, 2Gb Ram and an ATI FireGLT2 videocard + UXGA screen. I have no problem reading videos files with this setup EXCEPT when there are HD inside ;)

MKV, TS or this kind of files won't play correctly on my setup; I have tried MPlayer, VLC, Media Player Classic and it is always the same result. Is it normal and due to the videocard which is not enough powerfull to decode the videos stream?

Hello Sergio,
The videocard won't do anything. You'd need a HD series of ATi cards or CUDA-compatible Nvidia cards before it is able to make use of it. Perhaps the x1600 and above is supported in some applications for decoding, but i'm not sure.

I wouldn't consider anything else than CoreAVC. It's really effective. I have never seen any cases where ffmpeg is particularly good/efficient compared to CoreAVC, even on extremely fast computers - but ffmpeg is open source and has much more settings to adjust. :)

This computer will play 720p just fine, I don't think it is capable of playing 1080p smoothly though.

yes 720p is fine on the t42p with vlc player. However for a 1080p video a t43 (with x300 64MB) worked.

I am quite surprised to hear that the T43 can handle 1080p (regardless of video card, which I think does absolutely nothing). The difference between that and the T42 is not that big...

Which decoder/version are you using?

I have even a P4 3.0GHz HT struggling with 1080p (dropping frames / low framerate / slowdown) with the latest version of K-Lite Codec Pack.

CoreAVC has no problem playing 720p as well as anamorphic 1080p on my T42 (1.6 GHz, MR7500). Although I haven't tested it, I am doubtful full 1080p will run well for me, but your T42p might have a shot at it.

that's what I thought... my computer is not able to play 1080p videos. it is a shame because I am planning to mod it to get a 2048x1536 screen... well, not bad if I only get 720p movies:)

thanks for all.
