I need to change my wireless authentication from WPA-PSK to WEP-open or WEP-shared. what problems would I expect and how to fix them if I have to not connect via WPA... thx

I've used WEP for many years and in a residential area is pretty safe. You can get a later card for your A31 and keep WPA-PSK. I am using a Ralink 11n card in my A31p now.

Or you can use MAC address filtering and be rid of the authentication problems.

I've always used Shared instead of Open SSIDs.

OT: this name Ralink keeps popping up, but never in a negative way.
Is Ralink (so much) better than Atheros?

No, it just was the first 11n miniPCI card available at the time. It actually is associated with some of the cheapest network gear in the business such as Airlink101. I have been buying one Ralink equipped WiFi router every year; 11g MIMO, 11 pre N, 11 pre N with gigabit ethernet switch. Since it can work at 300Mb rate, GE makes a lot of sense.

Today I have an Atheros 11n miniPCI card in my T42p. It works but like all non-IBM cards, not fully with Access Connections.
