Finally got mine in! Some questions...

#1 Post by LegendaryKA8 » Mon Jul 13, 2009 6:41 pm

Alrighty... since my old topic has be buried and I don't really want to bump a thread from the dead.... I finally got my T60 in.

To recap, it is a 2637-UN6 15" T60, with a T60P UXGA FlexView lid which was a factory replacement... most of the other specs are in my sig. Cosmetically it is about an 8/10, and on par with the 15" T42 I Frankensteined together. So far I'm extremely happy with this system, although I do have a couple of questions.

Firstly, I have upgrades on the way, including a 320GB 7200RPM HDD. I'm planning on installing my copy of Vista Ultimate x64 on the new drive. The T60 has XP currently, and other than the previous owner's addition of some decent system utilities it's factory stock(the HDD also has the recovery partition).

What I want to do is install Vista x64, but I want to ensure that I have the complete gamut of Lenovo utilities once I'm done. I recall there being a Thinkvantage system update utility, but I heard they stopped it?

What do I need to do to get a 'factory stock' configuration on my new HDD/OS?

The only way to get a 'factory stock' disk image is to install it using rescue and recovery CD's for a T60. System Update 3 is alive and well. See this link -

Not sure about your machine, but for the T61P the "system toolbox" that goes out for updates lagged behind SP2, so it would abort and not run if SP2 was installed. I manually edited a file to make it work, I don't know if it officially has been updated yet, much less updated for Vista/64.

While trying to make sure that I could test out Bitlocker without locking myself out of my drive, I DID just do a "rebrick" of my older hard drive, using the recovery partition on the hard drive to reinstall the OS and Lenono tools from scratch, then using the system toolbox to update their stuff, and the Windows Update to update Vista. SP1 and SP2 both have to be installed, in sequence, they are no longer cumulative SPs.

Total time (with minimal DSL but that's the least of it) to do the complete rebrick and update everything? Just about 24 hours from start to finish, taking eight hours off for sleep and a few other short breaks. And that's with no third-party applications, just the MS & Lenono stuff installed and updated.

Be prepared with some good reading material.<G>

Note:
For Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) Service Pack 2, it is required to install the ThinkVantage System Update patch before running System Update. For more information click on the link below:

Excellent information as always... thanks for the quick replies!

Since System Update is in fact working again, it looks like this is the route I'm going to take. My copy of Ultimate doesn't have any of the service packs on it, so I should be able to get that working with a minimum of fuss.

I do know that updating Vista like it should takes ages... I tried it on the T42 and it took about eight hours. I was doing it as a test, anyway... Vista and T4x machines aren't exactly the best of friends at any rate.

Another thing I've noticed now that I put TPfancontrol on here are the GPU temps. I've done some poking around, but is 63-65C an acceptable idle temp for an X1400? I haven't really done anything to put it under load, but I really don't want to get my GPU up to critical temps by just doing some light gaming.
