Frankenpad TR52 with 915GM IGP. 1400X1050 bios mod.

#1 Post by kirpeknots » Tue Jul 14, 2009 3:07 pm

Hi,

I've got a IBM frankenpad. I created this because my T42 had the well known GPU problem. My frankenpad is a thinkpad R52 mainboard in a 14" T42 unit. I also have a 14" 1400X1050 screen wich I would like to use on it. The screen is not faulty (I used to use it on my T42).

The problem is that the R52 video bios hasn't got the 1400X1050 screen resolution in it's microcode. It does run with the 1024X768 screen.

My question. Can someone alter the VGA bios (Intel 915) so that it 'll include the 1400X1050 resolution?

Here's some output from 915resolution under Linux.

Modes I would like to change:
3c 1920X1440, 8 bits/pixel
4d 1920X1440, 16 bits/pixel
5c 1920X1440, 32 bits/pixel
I would like to change them to:
3c 1400X1050, 8 bits/pixel
4d 1400X1050, 16 bits/pixel
5c 1400X1050, 32 bits/pixel

More info:
Chipset: 915GM
Bios type: TYPE 1
Mode Table Offset: $C000 + $269
Mode Table Entries: 36

Example: 68 5B 80 A8 72 A0 3C 50 should be changed to 68 5B 78 A8 52 1A 3C 40

I've got some info from: http://www.jeffsplace.net/projects/bios_hack

"Resolutions are stored using 12 bits, i.e. 3 nibbles.

For the horizontal size, the highest nibble is the first nibble of the 5th
byte followed by the two nibbles of the 3rd byte. For example, in the "before"
BIOS dump, the first nibble of the 5th byte is 7, and the two nibbles of the
3rd byte are 80, which yields 0x780, which is 1920, the original horizontal
size.

For the vertical size, it is same as above, except taking the first nibble
of the 8th byte and the two nibbles of the 6th byte. So in the "before" BIOS
dump, the initial vertical size is 0x5A0, which is 1440."

So by using this rule, we can see that we the modeline for 1920x1440 with one for 1400x1050.

Who can build this Bios for me? The mainboard is from a 1858-CLG.

BIOS is not going to help you, however modded it may be.

The board you have will NOT run a 14" SXGA+.

It WILL run a 15" SXGA+.

Cables are different, BTW.
