Second internal hard drive for T42p

#1 Post by tsrzad » Sat Feb 05, 2005 9:31 pm

I know that I can replace my optical drive with either a second battery or an additional hard drive just like on my ASUS M6.

If using the additional hard drive, is it possible to configure a RAID or am I limited to using it simply as another partition?

I sure would enjoy a twin 60 gig 7200 rpm RAID when crunching huge Maya, SketchUp, SolidWorks or other CAD files....

You could setup a software RAID, but it will not provide much of a performance increase, if any, and may degrade performance for most things. You're better off tweaking windows and the second hard drive for better cache performance, etc, but not worrying about RAID on the t42 series. Some new laptops have more functionality for IDE/SATA 1/0 RAID but they really still don't have a huge performance gain imo worth the RAID, unless you really really need to have reduntant storage (mirroring).

An additional HD in the Ultrabay is on a secondary IDE channel not shared with the primary HD's IDE channel.

I run AutoCAD 2003, ShipCAD and SolidWorks on my T40 with two 7K60s installed, and do all my rendering and 3Ds on the 2nd HD. I feel confident in saying that were you to setup your T42p similarly, you'll be quite impressed with the output.

It's not equal to my P4 desktop, but hey, it's a laptop!
