Problems with Vista SP2

#1 Post by Eudoxus » Tue Jul 14, 2009 6:44 pm

I have a problem wiht SP2 on my Vista 64-bit system. I installed SP2 as soon as it was released, but in some time I realized that my system has acquired many quirks that were absent before, e.g. I stared to see BSOd more frequently. I decided to reinstall all the system (restored to factory settings) and started to all over again. But this time when I came to installing SP2 it not just refused to install at all (by reporting an error saying something about inactive srvice) but totally messed all the instalation in such a way that I got BSOD as soon as I logen into my account. So I guess, am I alone with such a problem and are there any work arounds for that issue? It is not the case that I am eager to get SP2, I just want my system being in good shape and up to date wiht latest security patches etc. Now I have SP1 and system refuses to install some microsoft updates.

Very hard to say at this point. I have had SP2 running reliably on my T61p with no quirks whatever. I have seen others here that are using it with no apparent problems. ... JDH

Do you have 64-bit Vista?

Yes. 64-bit is the way forward. I also replaced most of my softwre when I implemented the machine. Much had to be upgraded to work in 64-bit. ... JDH

This is why I never install service packs the second they are released. I usually wait for several months, which in most cases is enough for the quirks to be sorted out. Even know, after MS started pushing it, I'm still waiting.

Then again if everybody was as "smart" as me, how would vendors actually accumulate enough real world test data to fix those quirks?

I don't think that the problem is related to the fact that I installed an early version of SP2. Rather there is definetly something wrong with my system, because today I tried to restore my machine to the factory settings twice and both times I ended with BSOD and unfinished installation of Windows. I noticed that the second crash happened while installing turbo memory drivers. So I started to have some suspictions about turbo memory. Then I restored the system from a backup and disabled the [censored] thing. Now at least I have more or less working system but still it is unacceptable.
