DIY X61T SXGA+ Install Compatibility

Hi,

I have an X61t that came with a regular XGA panel.

I purchased an SXGA+ panel (FRU 93P5607) from an online store in the US as I had heard it is compatible with both X60t and X61t. I have a video guide to swapping out the panels (including swapping the digitizer over to the SXGA+ panel).

However, before swapping the digitizer + committing to the swap, I have unplugged the XGA panel, plugged in the SXGA+ panel (backlight and LVDS cable), and booted.

I basically got rubbish garbled display.

I have read a couple of posts suggesting that the panels are compatible. I was wondering if anyone could confirm from experience whether the SXGA+ panel I used (HV121P01-100) is compatible with the X61t, and also whether the stock x61t LCD cable (from the G5 assembly) is compatible with the 93P5607 screen.

Also, if anyone has any clues as to what the display visuals (explained below) could suggest, I would greatly appreciate it ( e.g. whether the screen I purchased could be DOA, or if it would suggest the display adapter is not picking up the right display mode).

I am very thankful for any advice that anyone has.... I'm at a loss for explanation.

Some additional information:


On the board mounted on the back of the SXGA+ panel, the sticker says it is a BOE-HYDIS HV121P01-100 as expected. There is another sticker on top of this saying "JU.23456.JU COMPATIBLE LCD". (I have no idea what this means.)

Upon booting with the new panel, the backlight came on, and the display went crazy in the order below:
*First some faintly growing vertical lines start to slowly appear.
*Then, while the 'Choose Windows Boot Volume / Safe Mode etc' prompt is showing, the text is half recognizable although squashed up in the bottom half along with random corruption all over the place.
*Then, the screen goes through a bunch of wierd patterns until Vista is booted. At times it is an almost polymorphous bunch of hues (assuming during the user logon screen), and finally settles into a crazy grid of vertical and horizontal lines. The visuals do slightly correspond to actual visuals shown in Vista, but are completely garbled. I can tell when it gets into desktop mode because the windows key functions to bring up the start menu changing the colour of most of the screen to grey.

*I have unplugged / replugged many times, put the XGA back in which still works fine.
*Display corruption patterns are repeated and does not flicker or change on different boots + reconnections which suggests it is not a connection issue but rather incompatibility.

I have a feeling it is the G5 cable assembly - you may need to download the maintenance manual for your X61T, and check out which cables are used for which application - I know there are different ones for the X60T, as I did the mod -> and I am sure if you have the G4 panel with Digitizer assembly, this is where your problem lays.....

I am off to the Gym quickly, but could do a bit of checking when I'm back around 14h00.

I assumed my X61t has the G5 panel/digitizer assembly, but I thought I would be able to swap out the LCD panel with a 93P5607 from the G4 assembly, which was meant for the x60t, without changing the cable, and then just put my old digitizer on the back. I thought the G5 / G4 cable change only affected the digitizer.

The cable I have physically plugs into the 93P5607 SXGA+ panel perfectly.

Ughh.. maybe I need a G4 type digitizer now to go with this panel... that is going to be a pain to find without the LCD.

Your display should still work fine without the digitizer connected - should not see any weird patterns etc.

Can you disconnect the digitizer cable at the back of the LCD, and test just with the LVDS cable connected?

Hi MrBean,

I haven't moved my digitizer over to the new panel yet (the panel came without a digitizer assembly), so every time I have tried it has been with the digitizer disconnected.

I have tried my old panel with the digitizer disconnected to see if that works, and it does. Not only that, but the old panel works with the same cable + setup. All I am changing is the panel, from the original XGA to the new SXGA+ one.

I am at a loss, all I can think of is
* The panel is faulty
* The LCD cable for the G5 assembly (which I have in my x61t) is not compatible with the SXGA+ panel meant for the G4 assembly which I am swapping in. However I have not seen any indication that this is the case, and many sellers have this panel listed as 'X61t / x60t compatibly'.
* The X61t BIOS is not recognizing the panels resolution (although again, I have never heard of this).

Thanks for your help! Hopefully someone has some information or can at least debunk some of the possible problems I am throwing around...

I'm not familiar with this model as I'm waiting for delivery still, but can you use the touch (finger) capability with this swap? I know that if you buy this computer with the sxga+ version installed it won't come with the touch capability.

Hey VipFreak. My x61t doesnt have multitouch, so that was not an issue for me. Which suits me, because if it had multitouch, I imagine it would be difficult or even impossible to transfer the multitouch hardware over to the SXGA+ panel.

Ok, yeah. I figured the reason is the resolution is too great to make touch accurate too. Thanks for the info. Glad the install went well for you.

Ahhh not successful just yet...

When I put in the SXGA+ panel, the display is all messed up, showing lines and patterns all over the screen. When I put the XGA panel back in everything is all fine again.

I am now convinced, after reading through many other posts, that the pinouts are the same amongst all x60t and x61t panels, whether XGA or SXGA+.

It would seem that the SXGA+ panel I ordered is faulty.

Well I sent it back. Turns out that touching the top would cause the patterns of lines to change or even disappear, so the panel must be dicky.

Wonder what the odds are of a $350AU panel being DOA.... oh well looks like another few weeks of waiting for SXGA+.

hi folks,
I want to ask you, can I change my XGA display with SXGA , and if yes what exact model of SXGA would you recommend? Are the LCD panel connectors and inverter same for XGA and SXGA and will be there a problem with touchscreen replacement?
My laptop model is x61 tablet 7767 BFG with multitouch.

PS. I've made a little search to find out that 7767 is purchased with this lcd's -XGA 13N7241/43/37/24/33/39/31/26 ,and they can be changed with - SXGA 93P5609 or 13N7235/25. Is this wright ? Still don't know what to do with touchscreen!
