Something keeps bothering me about cooling

#1 Post by JimL » Sat Jul 18, 2009 1:38 pm

How is dust handled in a T42?

I had constant housekeeping to do when using a desktop, even with home made filter boxes. It seems I should have the same thing with a laptop, except I don't have the slightest idea how one would clean it.

Thanks

I just remove the keyboard about once a month and use compressed air to blow out the dust. I also blow out the keyboard quite often. I don't use those cans of air, but my air compressor in the workshop.

Depends on how they are used:

My desktop is placed on carpeted floor and can get quite dusty inside.
Laptop is placed on the desk.
Kids who used laptops in they lap tends to get more dust inside.

But I do what charles does and clean them out periodically.

Does the air path start in the keyboard? I'm surprised I don't see piles of lint in the hot-air outlet.

Thanks

There are a few louvers in the case bottom. Some air would come in from the right around the Ultrabay. Some air would come in from the PCCard slot.

If you remove the MB, you can see foam barriers placed under the MB for air management.

I can imagine that every 50 years one should check those foam barriers for dust and lint!

Thanks

in a T4x most air comes in through the 4 holes above the headphone and mic jacks - there is an air duct straight to the fan there, and under the pcmcia slots
a little quantity of air comes in (more naturally that sucked by the fan) through several holes on the right (near the HDD) and several holes on the bottom
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T
