wireless icon flashing madly

#1 Post by Paul Unger » Sun Jul 19, 2009 3:27 pm

The wireless icon on my T42 (w/ 2200BG card) is flashing madly (the one in the indicator strip below the screen). The wireless icon in the task bar (the single computer screen that goes blue with activity) shows no activity, i.e., the 'screen' is black. Task Manager -> Networking shows ~ 0.22% utilization. This is a recent thing--last day or two. Any ideas / tools / utilities to see what's causing the utilization? Any idea whether it's just polling the router (though it seems excessive) or actually downloading from the internet (I have a limited account)? Thanks for any help!

Try testing it by unplugging the router from the internet. if it stops, then it is using the internet, possibly windows updates, and if it does not stop it is something internal.

Hadn't thought of that . . . good idea! I checked three other machines on the network and they were showing the same behaviour, so I figured it was 'internal' traffic. I have Windows Updates set to tell me when there's something new but not to download it automatically. It's over now, so I'm much relieved! But it was weird to see all that activity and not know what it was. :?
