wireless query: which mini pci?

#1 Post by runningman » Mon Jul 20, 2009 4:42 am

Hi there, I have an X31 type 2673/QG6. I'm very happy with it, although I have had a real pain with the wireless connection. I have used a couple of adaptor cards; one from Cisco, which was a complete non-starter, and a second from Netgear which, to be honest, has been a complete pain in the a***e due to its flaky reception and useless driver updates. I am now thinking that I would be better off with a mini pci card. So two questions: will this option give me a more reliable connection, and which one is going to work best in my X31?

Thanks v much :D

The X31 should pretty much accept most intel and Atheros miniPCI cards and work with factory drivers. My T42p is using an non-factory AR5008 11n card at the moment. This is not the case with X41 and T43. They only accept factory FRU cards.

Factory FRU cards will give the best compatibility with Access Connection but most cards will at least work with Windows Zero utility.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, I'm looking to upgrade an X41T's wireless module and would like to have some advice.

After reading a bit, I'm almost settled on those AR5008-based adapters. It seems to be the newest (and possibly the last?) 11n module that is available in the Mini PCI form factor (not PCIe). And others have reported positive results with such adapters and their ThinkPads.

As I understand it, with Zender's BIOS hack, there will be no problem using "unauthorized" modules on the X41T, the only issues will be that, the WLAN LED/light indicator may not work, and some modifying may be involved in tricking Access Connection to handle the adapter, correct?

So my last question is, are there 11n adapters that just work with the modified BIOS and no other hacks?

Thanks in advance.
