Upgrade HD on Thinkpad X40

#1 Post by mauicatt » Mon Jul 20, 2009 6:46 pm

I purchased a Seagate momentus 5400.3 ST9160821A - 106GB hard drive, but it doesn't fit into the HD bay when I remove the 40GB Hitachi HD that came in the laptop. When I called the place I purchased it, the rep said it should fit and I need to get the adapter attached to the old HD out of the laptop. IS this true? I don't find anything except the HD and it comes out easily.

The Seagate dimensions are approx. 2.75" wide X 3.75" deep. The original HD is approx. 2.75" wide X 2.50" deep. There is more than 1 Inch of it that is sticking out of the HD bay when I push the new HD into the pin connectors inside the bay.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm sorry to be the one to tell you but the X40, X41 and X41tablet only take vmini
1.8" hard drives in the slot on the left front. Apart from the small size of these drives,
the connection pins are on the sides rather than on the ends.
The full size laptop drive you have will only work in the dock that attaches to the
underside of your laptop and the adapter the seller is referring to is a drive adapter
that replaces the DVD in the dock.
Unfortunately 1.8" drives are expensive and are generally only available used on eBay.
There were made in 20G, 30G, 40G and 60G sizes, there is also a 64G solid state drive
but it's super expensive. You may also need a caddy to hold the drive in place.

Welcome to the forum.

There are members including myself that had used a similar size drive type called 1.8 inch ZIP HDD that is commonly used in music players. These typically use a small adapter board. There a few useful threads related to this conversion. One particularly informative is by HarryC.

The conversion takes some work to install but generally works well and some even provide improved performance.

In this thread you can find part numbers to some of these drives.
