ibm t40 wireless upgradeable ? Please help

#1 Post by wireman24 » Wed Jul 22, 2009 5:39 pm

Hello
I just received a T40 that does not have wireless.
When i go to the IBM webpage it recognises the laptop and says that it is wireless upgadeable. Does that mean I will only need to get the internal pci card and I will be good to go. From what i understand the antenna is already in the computer? Am i correct in assuming this?
Also if all I need is a pci card will the Intel 2200bg work ok. From looking around this forum it looks like it would be ok.
Or would I be better off just using a PCMCIA wireless card and not even mess around with installing a pci card?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Yes and yes ... the antenna is already installed and a 2200bg card is fine. Look for an IBM FRU though.

yes, all you need is an IBM mini-pci card, the slot is under the palmrest, the antennas should be installed.

If you want to play it safe, get the HMM, otherwise it is very simple to take off the keyboard and palmrest, all the screws are labeled.

See item #14 in the T40/p HMM (link below) for the acceptable FRU #s.

Seconded. Some of the T43-era cards may have problems with certain features such as Fn-F5, wireless LED, etc, in the early T40's.

I did end up buying an Intel 2200bg card. I don't think it came straight from IBM though is there any way to tell if it is a genuine fru?
I have been seeing on this forum that some people have had problems and get the 1802 error message after installing it. Do you think there is much of a chance of this happening with this card and if so will the 1802 hack http://www.command-tab.com/2006/02/26/t ... error-fix/
do the trick fixing it?
Thanks again
for any help

The card will have an IBM FRU number on it if it's an IBM card. Plus you'll get the 1802 error if it's not. To the best of my knowledge, the hack works with pretty much all of the cards.

The no-1802 hack worked perfect and the intel 2200bg card is working great.
Thank you so much to all that responded to my questions.

One silly question:

Here is link (220kb):
http://xs141.xs.to/xs141/09311/wireless626.jpg

Left is old original t40 a/b card, and right is ibm 2200bg card.
Left card have big metal parts for cooling.
Since it's on top of south bridge of motherboard is this metal there also for cooling south bridge?

Not a silly question...just the difference in design between IBM (Atheros-chipped) and Intel cards.

If you look at the later IBM (Atheros) mini-PCI cards, they're of the same design as the old a/b one.
