Genuine IBM/Hitachi TravelStar PATA 7200 100 GB Drives ...

#1 Post by systemBuilder » Fri Jul 24, 2009 1:04 am

Here is a source :

http://store.compmedia.com/ibm-hitachi- ... dware.html

Anyone know of a source for TravelStar drives with > 100 Gb of storage ??
=======================
Lots of thinkpads (10+) but I would never be so stupid as to list them all because that would spam everybody's searches and people who *do* try to list them all would be jerks.

The 7200rpm drives show as being out of stock.

100GBs is it. Drive makers stopped caring about PATA drives long ago.

I have an IBM/Hitachi TravelStar PATA 7200 60 GB Drive in my T42. I bought the T42 used with this drive installed about 3 years ago. No problems yet.

My guess is that a drive like the WD3200BEVE 320 GB PATA drive is a good deal faster than the 7200 RPM 7K100 series of Hiatchis, mainly because the latter is an older design. You don't have to do many "generations" of 5400 RPM drives, before it surpasses an older 7200 RPM.

I don't know the brand, but there are 500Gb PATA drives on eBay for under $90.00

You may want to double check that. I don't believe there exists a 500 GB PATA for a laptop

You double check it. Go to ebay.com and search for:

laptop hard drive -usb -external -sata

> I don't believe there exists a 500 GB PATA for a laptop

If there wasn't eBay would have put a stop to this a long time ago. I first started seeing them last month, but I hadn't looked for a long time. They've apparently been out for a little while.

NorrisCell is correct. The largest PATA laptop hard drive is 320GB. You can however buy up to a 500GB SATA laptop hard drive. There is a distinct difference between the two interfaces.

I know he's not.

On eBay today it is. I have seen 2.5" 500GB *PATA* drives other times. Look again in a few days.

Just because you see an eBay seller describing a 500GB notebook drive for sale, doesn't means it's necessarily true. Many mistakes are made when describing items. If you do find one, post the auction and/or provide a manufacturer's part number and we'll take a look at it. As far as I know, 320GB is the max for a 2.5", 9.5mm high PATA (IDE) notebook hard drive.

I have seen too many 2.5" 500GB *PATA* hard drives on eBay for them all to be mistakes. I didn't see any *today* - they were all SATA - but I have seen a lot of them. I don't know if they were 9.5mm or 12.5mm.

9.5mm would be the requirement for most of the latest Thinkpads using PATA drives. 12.5/12.7mm can go into some of the older systems but I don't know what the usefulness of 1/2 a terabyte would be for a 600X :) .

It would be quite interesting in an A3x, though... :D

I've never heard of a laptop PATA drive over 320GB, though...and am pretty sure that new egg and zip zoom fly would carry them if they indeed existed...

There are enough misinformed people out there to generate a steady stream of auctions. Not necessarily their fault, but that doesn't change the reality.

A lot of the big electronic sites keep old listings posted, saying "Out of stock" so there would be evidence if they once existed but are now extinct. NewEgg, Pricewatch, Amazon... none of them show such a product. That would point to any ebay listings fitting your criteria as being mistakes.

Also, the attitude is unnecessary. I've checked PATA listings hundreds of times, but I did once more before posting, just in case. Same result. No hits on the retailers, none on ebay, even in completed.
