Fan error.

#1 Post by newyorkpaulie » Tue Jul 28, 2009 2:04 pm

Yes I know this will sound dumb, but can I trust that (at startup) if I get the msg "Fan Error" along with 2 beeps it really is a problem with the fan? Is the fix to replace it? This is a new-to-me T30 and I noticed an odd sound a few days ago and figured it might be the fan motor. It stopped and I can usually feel the warm air coming out of the side, so I guess it's an intermittent thing. After the msg I pushed the start button and everything was OK.

Problem is usually just the fan and you should replace it. In some cases, it can be a motherboard failure, probably a fuse.

Took out the keyboard and gave the fan a good blast of air to clean out any dust... no problem with error msgs anymore. I also loaded and ran the program "tpfancontrol" to check my temps (not that you can do anything about them). I understand the T40s can be tweaked with this program, but with the T30s you can only see what the temps are and what the system is doing about them. If I still have a problem I am not fazed by swapping out the fan. I even have some thermal compound left from when I had to reseat another fan. Thanks!

Well the "grinding" sound came back. While it didn't last too long, I thought it might be a good idea to replace the fan... worried that I could fry my system. I got a new replacement and dug out my syringe of "Artic Silver" (both gotten on ebaY - where else?) and now I'm back in business. When I rebooted I was happy to feel a good healthy breeze coming from my PC's left side. Also, I note lower temps using "fancontrol.exe".
