Welcome to the forum!

Most HDTVs nowadays have HDMI inputs, but a T43 doesn't (AFAIK) have HDMI output so that won't work. S-video out (if your T43 has the connector) is NTSC video only, not hi-def. It might display, but will look very blurry.

Some earlier HDTVs had component input, but again the T43 doesn't (AFAIK) have component output, so that won't work.

A few HDTVs have a VGA connector. Now if your HDTV has VGA input, that is what you will use to connect. Connect the VGA output of your T43 to the VGA input of your TV (using a VGA monitor cable), and set the resolution to something the TV will accept.

For sound you will want to connect a cable to the headphone output of the T43 that has two RCA plugs on the other end, and plug those into the sound inputs that correspond with the VGA input.

You will need to use a docking station and a DVI to HDMI cable from the docking station to the HDTV. A DVI to HDMI converter with a regular HDMI cable will also work.

The cable I would use is something like this:

As Neil said. Use Fn + F7 to switch between VGA Out and the internal display.

Otherwise, for S-Video you need to use TV out. Bring up Display Properties (right-click on an open area of the display). Choose Advanced > Displays. For watching videos you also need to use Overlay mode. I don't remember all the details at the moment and I am booted in Linux so I can't check just now, however the following thread explains it pretty well. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=29818

I have the background displayed on tv but nothing seems to happen when i play movies. When I bring up display-advanced I am not getting the screen with the three pictures your talking about with the red buttons etc. I'm getting close but still baffled.

I am familiar with doing this on my T42 with Lenovo's ATI video driver. If you have Intel video instead of ATI, then you may see something different.
Drivers and software - ThinkPad T43, T43p

Note that the TV has to be on, proper input selected on the TV, and connected to the ThinkPad before you can select TV OUT.

If you are getting the PC desktop showing up on the TV, but you can't see a video, then you need to enable overlay mode as outlined in the thread I linked to earlier.

If you right-click on My Computer and choose: Hardware > Device Manager > Display Adapter (click on the + sign). What do you see? Intel or ATI?

Alternatively, instead of clicking on My Computer you can go to Start > Control Panel > System to see the same thing.

If you are using Windows XP, try installing the following video driver.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 61503.html

If you are using Vista, try installing the following video driver.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 67663.html

To install either driver above, run the exe file you download, then run setup.exe as per the installation instructions.

Not to hijack this thread but, I was wondering the difference between using VGA connection from my T42 versus using a DVI from my T42 docking station to HDMI cable to my LCD TV?
I notice in the video out there is an option of VGA vs DVI, I was wondering if there is a big difference? I use the VGA to VGA now and it works fine, but I am missing something better with a DVI to HDMI?

This may not help but i use the S-video out on my T43P all the time.
But i only connect it to a JVC 32" CRT tv. And i also have Windows 7 on my T43P.
I plug in the S-video cable to laptop and TV. Use the Fn+F7 and it gives me few options...Computer only , Duplicat , Extend and Projector only.
All of them work and it changes the rez to 1024x768.
I watch alot of Dvix movies on TV this way.Works great.
