RAM Specs for X30
Hi,
I just picked up an X30 with only 256MB of RAM and its dog-slow in XP. I would like to up it to 1GB and I see 1gig PC133 SODIMM kits on eBay for around $45.
Unfortunately I've only seen no-name brands and I was wondering does brand name matter in laptop RAM?
Also, I've seen some of the RAM stated as 2.5V while others are 3.3V, same thing with low and high density and CL2, CL3.
Which combination would work in the X30 and also, which would would give the best results (i.e. speed)?
Thanks,
-Alex

Re: RAM Specs for X30
There are a lot of misinformation out there.
PC133 should work. Within PC133 generation there is only 3.3V. DDR went to 2.5V but it doesn't concern X30s.
I've only seen 512MB single bank (high density) in 168pin DIMMs. That 2 module SODIMM kit should be 2x 512MB low density SO-DIMMs.
These things take huge amount of money to make so I venture to guess they will be name brand chips when you receive them.

Re: RAM Specs for X30
It may matter. Some older laptop are very picky about memory in my experience. You could buy it somewhere easy to return like BestBuy, but it will probably be more expensive there. Go to Crucial.com. They have a memory configurator there. I don't think which memory you use will make a big difference as long as it work. The important thing is to get more memory.
Don't forget the hard drive on the X30, which is also probably a significant factor in the slowness. A faster hard drive will help speed things up.

Re: RAM Specs for X30
I guess I'll go check out the local used PC shops first for the RAM and probably a 5400 drive to replace the 4200 that's in there now. At least this way I can try it out right away in the shop before buying.

BTW, you'll be looking for 144-pin DIMMs.
There shouldn't be much of an issue there...post a WTB ad in the forum's marketplace and you'll likely do better than you would on fleabay...
