WANT: Bluetooth Signal-Level Displaying Software

#1 Post by dozer » Fri Aug 07, 2009 6:23 pm

forum-mates,

I've got a BT audio-link that we use to play mp3's through the cabin's small stereo system; but it is really marginal on signal/range.

So I've begun experimenting with its antenna. My first phase involves making a corner-reflector, using the unit itself with its internal antenna as the driven-element.

Basically, to translate that technical antenna-talk into practicalities, that means tape some tinfoil to the wall behind the little box, and play with the spacing...

Anyway, this Widcomm BT stack is just terrible....in all ways...but in regards to this project, its signal-level display has very coarse resolution....just 4 discrete levels shown....the high two of which -never- light up, even with the unit 2 feet from the laptop....and it updates reeeaaallly slowly too.

So I'm hunting for some kind of BT diagnostics software that I can use for doing antenna-positioning tests, etc..

Or perhaps a better stack to replace this entire Widcomm disaster...which would include a higher-res and faster-updating signal-meter?

Any experiences, observations, and refs to such software, would all be appreciated, 8)

Another alternative you might want to consider is booting up one of the more full-featured Linux LiveCDs. The Linux hcitool command line utility will give you considerably more detailed information than any of the Windows BT stacks. It can be fiddly and you'll have to read a few man pages to learn how to use it, but for this kind of experimenting it might be just what you need. And best of all, its free and you don't risk breaking your working Windows BT stack :)
