So I just got a "junker" T41 - where to get parts?

#1 Post by GarageBoy » Tue Aug 11, 2009 8:42 pm

It has the connection issue with the GPU, so I'll probably get that done as soon as I find someone who can do it. Where can I get a power supply, hard drive (It doesn't suffer from the same issues as the T43, right?), and hard drive "caddy"? Do fleabay specials work? It's probably going to get an ubuntu install, unless there is a cheap way to get legit Windows on it.

Thanks

Where can I get a power supply? Craigslist, ebay or here on marketplace.
hard drive? Retail or marketplace
It doesn't suffer from the same issues as the T43, right? No problems with T41.
hard drive "caddy"? ebay

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

You've come to the right place for these questions :) . All of those parts can be obtained quite easily from eBay or here in the Marketplace forum. Power supplies run around $10-$15, hard drives vary according to the size and speed but any PATA (aka, IDE) drive will work (and not give the 2010 boot error like the T43) and a hard drive caddy is about $5. As far as Windows goes, that depends upon the Windows COA that's (presumably still) attached to the system. You should be able to order a recovery disk set from IBM (~$50 or so) or you can post a WTB (want to buy) in the Marketplace.

Oh, there is no HD included when I bought it. Also, any place for an OEM power supply or just post a WTB on the forum?

:D

Welcome to the forum. When I needed an AC adapter I looked on Fleabay. I wanted to be cautious so I made sure the FRU was a match with my R52. I don't know if you downloaded the Hardware Maintenance Manual but that's one of the first things anyone should do with a Thinkpad purchase!

Your AC adapter should be a 72-watt one although I hear a 90 will work also.

I don't have an T41 but just ask away here. Lot of guys who will get you moving along happily!

Have fun :)

I wouldn't want to squeeze that mother of a hard disk into your laptop. :BAAAD!:
The model you picked is a 3.5" hard disk, and what you need is a PATA 2.5" hard disk, that's 9.5mm high.
Any of these (except the 4200rpm) will do: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... name=ATA-6

No, you won't need Windows or Recovery CDs of any sort if all you are going to install Ubuntu. You will only need Ubuntu install media. Now if you want to dual boot...you will need install media for both OSs.

And PLEASE if you do not have it already- Download the LiveCD or order it.

This is an extremely valuable tool to have not only for Linux but for Windows as well!

You can recover files and manipulate partitions if need be.

Best of luck to you :)

No, 90w adapter is for T6x and later series, 20V instead of 16.5 and has a different plug.

72w with 16.5V is the correct adapter for T4x units.
