Word Processor choices
I am running Xp on my T30 and have been using a trial-Office 2007.
Now that the period is over I was wondering what other alternatives there are besides Abiword and OpenOffice.
I like Open Office on my Linux-side but I just want a word processor for now.
Any suggestions?

Re: Word Processor choices
Try Jarte. It's basically derived from word pad and uses the word pad engine. But it adds spell check and probably a few other goodies. I have been putting it on my xp laptops for simple wordprocessing. Since it saves files in rtf format you can import them directly into MS Word on another machine. Experiment with the different interfaces on Jarte. Once you get used to the one you choose, it should be a pleasure to use compared with Open Office which is overkill and requires sun java. If you only need to do lightweight word processing that's what I'd suggest. And, oh yes, it's totally free!

That sounds like something I'd like. I will definitely read up on it more!
Thanks CP and everyone else!

"Atlantis Ocean Mind", an odd sounding word processor that uses the standard .rtf format. I think there may still be a freeware version, and the paid version is reasonably priced and well supported. I used it till I got MS Office 2007 via TechNet.emeraldgirl08 wrote:I am running Xp on my T30 and have been using a trial-Office 2007.

You have to pay an initial fee and then yearly fees to stay in. I believe the initial fee is something like 350 dollars right now. Every now and then they have a special for a few days for less (it was 250 last month for a week or so). The yearly fees are around 250 a month now. Go to msdn.microsoft.com and do a search for "subscriptions" or "technet subscriptions" and you should find it. The license you get is for testing/evaluation purposes and not for use in a "production" machine. Any software you pick up from the subscription is perpetual. In other words you don't have to renew the subscription to keep on using the software. You just won't get the newer versions that come out after your subscription becomes inactive.
If you just want office 2007 you'd be better off just picking up one of those student/teacher editions for 3 users for 100 dollars or less. I think it includes word, excel and powerpoint. Not other modules like Access or publisher. Or else if you are a student (I recall you might be) you might be able to get the academic version for even less.
I picked up freebie retail versions of 2007 office pro from Microsoft by watching some videos when they were just introducing 2007 3 years ago. If I hear of any such programs for office 2010 I'll let you know.

Re: Word Processor choices
why don't you buy from someone MS office XP. shouldn't be that much and nothing can be MS office.
Re: Word Processor choices
and OneNote which I really like. It's called Student and Home now, so there's no silliness about having to pretend to be a student or teacher. I paid something like $75-80 for it at nothingbutsoftware.comcparker wrote:I think it includes word, excel and powerpoint.

Re: Word Processor choices
I am a WordPerfect fan myself. Remember WordPerfect???
I am still using the version I bought about 5 years ago, WordPerfect Office 11. I much prefer it to Microsoft Office Word 2003.
Anyhoo, here is a comparison of word processors for you to look at. It is comparing the last version of WordPerfect (WordPerfect X3) to others. The current version is WordPerfect Office X4.
