Loss of PCMCIA on Thinkpad 240

#1 Post by griffik » Tue Feb 08, 2005 1:09 pm

Thinkpad 240 2609-21G 320Mb 30Gb Win XP Pro SP2
When I plug in a USB2 PCMCIA card I get the following error message in a bubble by a yellow flag on the system tray:-
The device Texas Instruments PCI-1211 Cardbus Controllor has detected a Cardbus card in its slot but the firmware on the system not configured to allow the cardbus controller to be run in Cardbus mode. The operating system will currently accept onl .. - thats all there is.
If I run Thinkpad Configurator and select PC Card and then PC Card Properties nothing happens, nothing appears. Also during starting the program I get 'necessary component missing' and can't load VXD' about 12 times before it starts.
I've looked on the IBM site but there isn't a driver to reload
Any ideas on how to get this working again short of re-installation.
Thanks

Hi Griffik,
I am a newbie but:

- Did you try device manager to reload the driver?

- In win98 I had a problem with missing/corrupted vxd files and my solution was to rename them and reinstall win from the c:

Good look

Hi Thanks for your prompt response
I had thought of these but there are a couple of problems
1. I don't have a source for the driver. The IBM site only has a DOS version.
2. The error message only says VXDs are missing it doesn't say which ones.

So I was hoping someone could explain what had happened and a way to reinstall the driver and config program. Has it been caused by XP Pro or by SP2.

Any ideas anyone.
Thanks
Keith

The drivers come with Windows. Go into device manager and delete the device. When you restart, Windows should re-detect the PCMCIA controller and re-install its drivers.

Hi Thanks for your suggestion

I have tried it and it still fails with the same message.

I have fixed the config program. I expected it to allow me to configure the PCMCIA but it doesn't, it just takes me to device manager which has nothing.

The error message implies that the PCMCIA can be 'configured' - but how?

I have dug out an old CDROM PCMCIA drive with a 16 bit card and that woks OK. So this must be the default mode it is working in.

So it seems to be - how do I configure the Cardbus Controller to run in Cardbus mode?

Anyone know?

Thanks
Keith
