Two Questions (BIOS and Visa)
Two Questions (BIOS and Visa)
I am considering the purchase of the Thinkpad T42 (2379DXU) and I have two questions that I hope someone here might know the answers to:
1. Does the BIOS of the Thinkpad allow for turning off things like Bluetooth and the built in ethernet? I ask because I will run a free Unix on this machine and I would prefer to limit what I need to support. (I couldn't seem to find a copy of the T42 manual online.)
2. Does the IBM-Visa discount link often cited on this board work with Visa Checkcards as well as regular credit cards?

As usual, if you do not load the necessary drivers then the hardware will not be probed, so it almost certainly does not interfere. Fn+F5 (de)activates bluetooth even without driver support.
If you want to know precisely what is in the bios, there is a admittedly cool bios simulator, using flash (first good use of flash on the web ever):

Re: Two Questions (BIOS and Visa)
Sure, any VISA will work.
Actually, any Mastercard or AMEX or Discover also.
Once you put the Thinkpad you want in your cart and go to checkout, you can use any credit card. If you have an issue, call a live sales rep. and they will match the VISA discount for any credit card.
IBM is not dumb...
They are not going to turn away a sale because you don't have a VISA card. Any credit card will work fine with them!!
Also, be sure to contact bill@thinkpads.com (the owner/operator of this website) if you are looking for a better deal on a Thinkpad.
Many people here have been very happy with his pricing and service.
