Internal wireless problem.

#1 Post by newyorkpaulie » Sat Aug 15, 2009 7:47 am

My internal wireless connection is not working. I tested the router using an external (USB) wireless modem and it's fine, but when I try to check for available wireless networks using my internal modem I get a "no wireless networks were found in range" msg.. Anyway to test this? I'm using WinXP Pro on a T30 and this was working fine until today.

In such cases I usually boot up a Linux live CD and see if wireless works then. That's one way to tell whether you have a hardware problem or a Windows problem.

You can also delete the hardware
Start=Control Panel=System=Hardware=Device Manager=Network Adapters (normally)
Delete it, shut down the system and remove the card.
Restart it and let it boot to Winblows
Shut it back down and reinstall the card
It should then refind the card, and attempt to reinstall the driver
Sometimes after an update Windblows forgets things
Costs nothing to give it a try

I remembered that I had done a ThinkVantage System Update recently that concerned the wireless driver so I reinstalled a prior backup. It's fine now. I must remember not to do that update again. Shame you can't trust the update software. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but I can't guess what.

If there are any wifi networks near your laptop, Netstumbler will find them better than most programs, that's all.
