A20p

#1 Post by Throttle Thumb » Tue Feb 08, 2005 6:30 pm

I hope somebody can help me out here. I have a ThinkPad A20p. When I power up, the screen stays black. The drives cycle and the only light that is on after that is the circle with the Z. There are no beeps or sounds. I replaced the main board and the LCD power inverter card. I tried conecting to an external monitor and still get nothing. I am out of ideas.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Have you tried replacing the CMOS battery?

Cmos Battery

I have not tried to replace the CMOS battery. I guess I could, but I thought the computer would still start even if it was dead.

No, it can't/won't start with a dead CMOS battery and your symptoms are exactly what I would expect to see if that were the case.

I assume you mean you reseated the RAM chips. Reseat the CPU chip next - it's a bit more involved.

Reseat CPU

#9 Post by Throttle Thumb » Thu Feb 10, 2005 10:20 am

I have completely disasembled the thinkpad before. I again, took the CPU out and locked it back in place. I am running out of things to replace, and do. I know the hard drive is good, because I placed it in a USB enclosure and hooked it up to my desktop. The motherboard and LCD power inverter are new. I put in a new CMOS battery. All I have is a black screen and the fan running.

Any other suggestions?

I'm sorry to be the one to tell you that your motherboard is probably toast.

Was the replacement system board used?

Which FRU board did you replace it with?

Hello,

sorry, to possibly add to the confusion, but ...

... are You sure, that the backlight/lcd is okay, have You tested Your nb with an external screen?

You said, it started, drives circling, but You did not see anything. I lived up to something rather similar (as symptom) while my A31P was some month old (!). I did not find out, until I happened to recognize, that the screen-lightning had died away...
