Lenovo taking the PIS (Package Index Server) again...

#1 Post by GlynH » Sun Aug 16, 2009 6:23 pm

Why oh why did Lenovo take the excellent Software Installer & morph it into the crappiest piece of software by the name of System Update? :?

Am I the only one who laments the passing of Software Installer? :(

Not content with leaving me wondering why Software Installer failed to work for some time when they released SU I went through a phase earlier this year of being informed that SU was not available for the best part of a month right when I needed it to update 15 X41T machines. :evil:

Now when I run it and after it connects it advises it must update itself then gives me an important message from Lenovo advising it has changed to improve the user experience(!) and then gives me the option to install.

Clicking install tells me it is downloading System Update but then I get the message;

"System Update has failed to download. Make sure you have an active network connection and retry" :twisted:

Well it does have an active network connection you dumb-[censored] piece of software... :roll:

As per the subject Lenovo is really taking the PIS - that's Package Index Server - well named if you ask me! :wink:

I am sick to death of crappy Lenovo software making my life hell when it should just work transparently on its own hardware. :eek:

Having suffered the sluggishness of the X41T for some years now due to the slooow 1.8" HDD and having no easy way of substituting this piece of junk with a decent SSD which would have given it a new lease of life and having had one too many issues with System Update this is the last straw - no more Lenovo hardware for us after this latest fiasco...final nail in the coffin. :BAAAD!:

In the meantime if anyone has a solution for the inability of Lenovo's own software to update itself as it promises I would be glad to hear it...I did try uninstalling System Update from Add/Remove in Control Panel but it has been sitting there for nearly an hour gathering information... :cry:

Thanks & regards,

I sympathize with your frustrations and frankly I haven't attempted to try the new update system yet.

I don't know for sure, but the original System Update probably belonged to IBM. And IBM wanted a bunch of money from Lenovo to continue to use it after the divestiture support contract expired. Bear in mind that IBM with all these great systems and services but can't stay in PC business.

Most drivers are not being updated for your X41t anymore. There are only three or four key utilities that should be updated (more or less): AC, Power Manager, Presentation Director, R&R utility. Then manual update should suffice.

As for faster HDD/SSD solution. Lenovo do support faster solutions including a SSD discussed in the post just below. There are many aftermarket solutions with good performance too:
