What is safe temperature of T41p GPU?

#1 Post by numerant » Tue Aug 18, 2009 6:43 am

Hello,

At the beginning sorry for my terrible english ;)

I'm very happy owner of Thinkpad T41p 2373-GEG with Banias 1,7GHz and FireGL T2 onboard.

Recently I changed thermal grease, because CPU temperatures were so high (more than 75°C). Now everything is OK, I also undervolted my Pentium and finally its max temp is about 60°C. But now I have another problem - temperature of my FireGL T2. About 45-50°C on idle isn't worrying, but 79°C on stress (Video Card Stability Test) gives me headache. Is it too much, or I'm simply oversensitive? I dunno, maybe that high temperature is caused by improperly installed cooling system? That values were shown by NHC with IBM ACPI Control System plugin.

Thanks for help.

Well, 80 degrees is getting up there. You may have disturbed the contact between the GPU heat sink and GPU when you put the thermal grease on the CPU. As I recall, the T41p has the long fan with a grey heat pad on the GPU. The grey pad on one of my computers began to rot and fall to pieces (which couldn't have been good for heast transfer). I'd take another look at the heat pad but it can be challenging if it is destroyed because now you have a wide gap which cannot simply be filled with thermal grease.

So what to do now? Buy new thermal pad and replace it? I tried to apply thermal grease on a pad, but without success. Thermal pad doesn't look like destroyed, but - when I was removing cooling system first time, it was so hard - propoably contact was good, now it's so simple and doesn't require much force.

I would give that a try. Not sure if you'll be able to find the right one but hopefully something similar that will work. Maybe someone else on this bord will have had some experience with new heat pads.

@Tekken
Sorry for spamming, but the author of this thread wrote 3 magical letters NHC - Notebook Hardware Control + some extra plugin. This application is really good as for all kind of measuerments and control options. Give it a try and you'll see
T40 and T43 on bookshelf, t61 sxga+ x3100 + T8100 (Mum), t61 sxga+ x3100 t9300 and t420s i5 (mine toys :D), R500 P8400 (sister)

After applying Arctic Silver 5 between thermal pad and GPU my stress temperature is ~72 degrees. It's better than 79, but... isn't it still too much?
