R61 Type 8927 A52 Will not shut down

I have a Thinkpad R61 Type8927 A52 and it will hang up not completely shutting down. I have XP loaded, no errors in the device manager. I ran a diagnostics program from the bios utility HDD0: HITACHI and the result was ERROR code 0000: Read verification failed <<<<An error was found please call for service>>>>>.

The machine works correctly now with the software loaded, just not shutting completly down hanging. I manually turn off the maching pressing the power button.

Bios version 2.12, T8100 2.1GH, 2GB Ram.

Have you tried the suggestions Microsoft gives on Advanced troubleshooting for shutdown problems in Windows XP?
