T41 freezes for 3-5 minutes when entering windows....
It used to do this randomly, now its everytime i boot...
The welcome screen used to be up for 10 or so seconds, then windows would boot in another 20-30 seconds and i would be ready to go.
Now, the welcome screen stays up for roughly a minute, then it loads up my wallpaper and sits there with nothing happening for 3-5 minutes. I can hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and it shows that explorer loaded, as did all my other apps, but it doesnt do anything.
Nothing has changed recently, norton is updated and was run last week. Windows is updated and ad scans are run weekly.

Windows can lock up when trying to load up wireless nic's.... run microsoft bootvis.... google for it... it will speed up some of the slow boots... also, try disabling network adapters esp. wireless

It keeps coming back after restart saying 0 drives detected.
This does sound like the 120-second network delay that has to do with booting up in a wireless environment that is different than where you last logged off.
If you're running XP SP1, disable Wireless Zero Config in services.msc.
If you're running XP SP2, make sure WZC is enabled.
Reboot and see if it still happens?

Ok, i got Bootvis to work...
The entire boot proces takes 151.2 seconds (according to Bootvis)
Would posting the boot file here help? I don't know what im looking for
Just rebooted again. After turning the laptop on, it arrives at the welcome screen at 0:30, wallpaper comes up at 1:00, taskbar/startmenu at 3:05. The entire time between the wallpaper and the taskbar coming up the system dosen't appear to be doing anything, hard drive icon not lit.

so..!
try disabling notron AV and then reboot..
at first it sounded like your HDD was crapping out..
a sudden and unusually long boot time can sometimes be traced to a HDD not finding sectors.. doing retrys..
now..? hard to say..

I ran a check disk 2 days ago and it found no bad sectors...
I dunno why i glazed over that... I just disabled the wireless adapter and bam, boots in 50 seconds.gazingwa wrote:Windows can lock up when trying to load up wireless nic's.... run microsoft bootvis.... google for it... it will speed up some of the slow boots... also, try disabling network adapters esp. wireless

Exactly what we were thinking. If you look in one of the graphs on your bootvis traces, you'll see a HUGE 120-second delay attributed to "Network delay."aphex wrote:I dunno why i glazed over that... Supposedly, if you run IBM Access Connections with WZC enabled and started under SP2, the delay shouldn't happen.
It also shouldn't happen if your NIC is off by default when you boot up.
Try removing IBM Access Connections from bootup and see if anything changes.

Uninstalled Access Connections and still has the delay.... How can i set my wireless card to default off during boot?Kenn wrote:Exactly what we were thinking. the reason i told you to download bootvis was not to time it.... under trace... there is an option to optimize system... makes a machine boot much faster. sorry should have been more specific

Try hitting Fn-F5. Turn Off the wireless connection, then click OK. When you've confirmed that the wireless indicator (below the LCD display) is off, you can shut down and reboot. The problem with this is you need to remember to turn off your wireless connection every time you shut down, so it's not a real solution.aphex wrote: Uninstalled Access Connections and still has the delay.... Try this instead (though it shouldn't really work): Go to services.msc and disable Wireless Zero Config. See if you can boot quickly. If so, reinstall Access Connections and keep WZC disabled.
You will also need to test this on different profiles to make sure it works - I had a HELL of a time over 3 days thinking I had it fixed, only to find that the delay would come back every time I booted up next to a different wireless access point from where I had connected when I last shut down :/
Also, there may be a newer version of IBM Access Connections than one you're using. Specifically there was an upgrade a few months back for better SP2 compatibility, you might want to check the IBM site for that.
