how to tell x61s battery is 5.2Ah vs 4.53Ah

#1 Post by sob2104 » Tue Aug 18, 2009 7:41 pm

hi everyone

I had an 8 cell 5.2Ah that died (1 month after expiration of its 1 year warranty, thank you)
now I ordered the same battery from a seller on amazon
but the battery shows both 5.2Ah AND 4.53Ah on the back label... how can I know for sure I wasn't ripped off?

thanks

S

What's the FRU of the new battery? Is it a genuine Lenovo battery or a knock-off?

From a practical point of view, if you remember how long your original battery lasted when it was new, you could see how that compares with the life of your replacement battery.

You could read the information directly from the battery itself.

In Linux, cat /proc/acpi/bat/BAT0/info or whatever would tell you the original design capacity, current capacity (used to calculate battery wear), and other information that's interesting.

In Windows, there are many utilities to read the same info, including the power meter application shipped by Lenovo. I don't have the details (no Thinkpad around here), but that should get the ball rolling.

I have an FRU (dont have it right now though), how can I know if it corresponds to the right version? is there a list of FRU's out there?

I'll try to look at the power meter... is it supposed to display the initial capacity?

I think you have to go into the 'battery information' or detailed battery information.

Here's a good example of what I'm referring to: http://lenovoblogs.com/insidethebox/?p=52

make sure that you put your old battery in once more and visit this link:
http://download.lenovo.com/lenovo/conte ... gPage.html

some failed batteries are up to one year after waranty...

in the best case you get a free new battery, in the worst case you wasted 5 min.

cheers

You could also use the Lenovo battery/power manager - it provides lots of battery information as well.
