data transfer to new larger hard drive
When you transfer data from a 40gb hd to a 100gb hd are the files still on the 40gb and can you still use the 40 hd?
Re: data transfer to new larger hard drive
So far as I know, yes, the files remain on the old drive.
Two things:
1. Don't make a habit (if you were going to) of changing the laptop drive too frequently. It wears out the receiver. It can go in an UltraBay.
2. If you were going to sell or give away the drive (a 40Gb drive is too small today to be of much value), be sure you get rid of the data before you do.

Re: data transfer to new larger hard drive
Thanks! Could I use it in another laptop that has no hd? Whats the best way of deleting the files?
Re: data transfer to new larger hard drive
If the drive is compatable with the proposed laptop, then you can use it. The best way to delete the files is to format the hard drive and start again. You cannot legally use the license from the first machine (with the new 100Gb drive) on the other laptop. You need to use the other laptop license. The best way to do this (for a Thinkpad) is to get a set of recovery CD's for it and use those to both format the drive and remage it. ... JDH

Broadly, you need a bootable CD with format capability. Reovery CD's for Thinkpads do this. Bart's PE will do this for any computer. ... JDH
