How do I know if I'm going into Standby or Hibernate?

#1 Post by thinkpadhk » Wed Feb 09, 2005 12:53 am

Hi all.

So, I've decided not to turn off my laptop when going out for a couple hours etc. Instead I want to put it in Standby or Hibernate. Question is:

1) What keys do I press to put it in Standby? What about Hibernate?

2) Does the status light indicate which mode you're in? If it does, what what does it look like for each case?

3) Which is the preferred method? (Standby or Hibernate)

Thanks!

1) Look at the keyboard: Fn+F4 is standby (see the moon?) and Fn + F12 should be hibernate (save to hard disc). Of course you can also go to Start > Shut Down, then select using the drop-down.

2) Explore.

3) I prefer standby unless I'm transporting the laptop, then hibernate. You may also wish to read an old poll on the two. And in case you didn't know the difference between standby and hibernate.

btw, my vote (when you go out, etc.) would be to leave it on. I never standby / hibernate unless the macbe is "moving".

If you see the moon then it's a standby. If it's off, it's either off or hibernating. And yes, once you know what how to go into both modes, you can play around and see what the lights actually do.

Is there really any issue of moving your TP when it's in Standby? I have skateboarded with it numerous times in my backpack, put it in a car, etc. with it in standby, and it still works perfectly.

It seems everything shuts down when in standby. The HD, the fan, etc.

I have heard speculation that it's a problem, but is it really?
