How to check thinkpad

Need to check used thinkpad.
What utilities is recommended for it. AFAIK mhdd - is good one for checking hdd suface.
I'd like to have utilities for checking display's and other components of thinkpad (battery for example).

What model ThinkPad is it?

You should be able to press the blue 'access IBM' button on the keyboard during bootup to get into the pre-desktop area. From there you can run PC Doctor, which will test all the components in the ThinkPad.

maybe somebody know what is the difference between T41 and T42 models ?

Very little beyond upgraded (735 - 745) processors in the T42. And some T42s have the fingerprint reader.
