X200s - WLAN, WWAN, WUSB, WXGA/WXGA+, WebCam

#1 Post by t3mp » Mon Aug 24, 2009 3:08 am

Hello, I would like to buy X200s, but I am a little bit confused with some options, so do you think you could correct some wrong statements and answer some questions? Thank you.

UPDATE: - confirmed/solved, unsloved

1√) Models with WXGA display & without WebCam can have max. 6 antennas:
3 ant. for WLAN (5300/5350; 5100/5150 uses only 2 of them)
2 ant. for WWAN
1 ant. for WUSB

2a√) Models with WXGA+ display has got 4 antennas:
3 ant. for WLAN (5300/5350; 5100/5150 uses only 2 of them)
1 ant. for WUSB

2b√) Models with WXGA display with Webcam can have max. 4 antennas:
2 ant. for WLAN (5300/5350; 5100/5150 uses only 2 of them)
2 ant. for WWAN

3√) If you want WXGA+ display, there is no way how to use WWAN. (except unauthorised intervention)
(Is there a WWAN slot in WXGA+ models?) - YES
(If yes, is the WUSB ant. long enough to connect WWAN module to use 5100 with 2 ant., no WUSB and 2 ant. for WWAN?) - NO
(If it is not long enough, Can you use 5100 with 2 ant., 1 ant. for WUSB, and only 1 ant. for WWAN?)

4√) If you want WUSB, then you can't get Intel Turbo Memory.

5√) Which models has got a slot for SIM card?

6√) What do I need to make GPS working?
martin255 wrote:A working WWAN card
7√) If you want WebCam, is there a space for 6 ant. in the LCD bezel, or only 4 of them are available in this case? - viz 1) & 2)

8) What is the difference between (on lenovo web site configurator):
- 12.1 WXGA (1280x800), 3x3 UltraConnect II antenna
- 12.1 WXGA, 2x2 UltraConnect II antenna with Camera and Wireless Broadband Upgradeable
*) So how many ant. have each display?
*) Does it mean, that the first one is not WWAN upgradeable?
*) Why only the second one has a WiMax(5350) option in contrast to first one?

(P. S. Too many questions, sorry for that. Thank you very much indeed)

To the best of my knowledge :

1) Correct, if there is no webcam
2) Correct
3) Yes, you can use WWAN, BUT you have to brute-force install the needed antennas yourself. There is a SIM slot even in the WXGA+ models. And I don't think the WUSB antenna is long enough to reach the WWAN PCIe slot.
4) Correct. They use the same slot (half mini-PCIe)
5) All
6) A working WWAN card.
7) The webcam-equipped display only comes with 4 antennas
8) This one I don't know. I thought that all WXGA models were WWAN upgradeable, and that the 4 vs 6 antennas only affected the WLAN card (i.e. the 5300/5350 only gets two antennas in a 2x2 config).

First option means that there are 3 antennas available for WLAN, and there's no antenna available for WWAN. So there's a total of 3 antennas. You need to supply both antennas and a WWAN card to have WWAN and do the antenna wiring yourself, which can be tricky.
Second option means that there are 4 antennas, 2 is available for WLAN, and 2 is available for WWAN. You just need to supply your own WWAN card.
Regarding WiMax, my guess would be that it's somehow dependent on the WWAN, but I don't have a concrete answer.

There are not any preconfigured models with 5300 and only Wireless antena kit, so there is no need to add MIMO ant. to them (although there are some CTO models), which means only 2 ant. I doubt that Wireless LAN/WAN antena kit in models with WebCam has MIMO ant. because this one is on right side of think light, where also WebCam is, so there is no space for it. I don't know, if there is a MIMO ant. in models with Wireless LAN/WAN antena and without WebCam, but except these ones I think you can get only even number of ant.

I do not know much about wireless technologies, I can say only that there are some preconfigured models with WiMax and without WWAN according HMM, so I hope, that lenovo does not make the WiMax useless in this models. But who knows, if there are also models with WXGA and WebCam (which means 4 ant.) but also with 5300 WLAN and WWAN (which means 5 ant. but only 4 of them is available!) - In this case it would be interested to find out if lenovo connect to WWAN only 1 ant. or to 5300 only 2 ant.
