T40 as a wireless server?

#1 Post by cshuy » Tue Aug 25, 2009 2:26 pm

I have a T40, an R61e, and my roommate has a new S series.

I also have a 1TB external hard drive and a wireless router.

I would like to turn the T40 into a wireless server for the hard drive to the other laptops.

Is this feasible?
Formerly owned: Thinkpad 1400i, 750, T30, R61e, Thinkpad SL500, IdeaPad s10-3t
Currently own: X131e Intel, Yoga, and IdeaCentre

On my home network, I am using T40 hooked up to an external 1TB drive. I turned on file sharing and shared the entire drive. On the other computers, I use the "map network drive" function to add it to "My Computer." Works fine. I can stream video wirelessly to another laptop hooked up to the TV. Seems to work fine.
Current Thinkpads: 600E, 600X, 701C, A31 (Flexview), R51 (Flexview), R60, T42P (Flexview), TR50E, T60 (Flexview), X61s (Ultralight), Z61m (Ti) Non-Thinkpad: Toshiba 100ct

I was planning on running small business server on mine so I purchased a 2nd hard drive holder for the bay. Haven't got around to it yet, but I bet it would work fine. You need 2 physical drives to install SBS2003RC2. Just need a USB cdrom I guess or some sort of adapter cable for the one I have.

Is that just an 802.11b (11 Mbps) card in the T40, and is that enough for video streaming? (for TV quality?).
What kind of video file or approximate resolution (low, medium, or HD) is being streamed. Thanks.

I use a Netgear Super G card and router. The quality isn't HD, but its pretty good. Medium? I don't know off the top of my head. If its any help, the videos run about 700MB per hour in XVID format. The T40 outputs the desktop at a XGA resolution. To my wife and I, the videos are indistinguishable from our DVD player. This is a 1080P TV.

Sounds roughly similar to my video rate and quite similar to the wireless setup I have (Netgear G MIMO). Guess it depends on the distance between your router and card? My speed varies from 54 Mbps (the max for G) down to as low as 11 Mbps sometimes, which lags :( . I usually see between 24-36 Mbps, but the card is about 60 feet from the router with 3 walls inbetween.
