Actual Weight of $849 X200s?

#1 Post by elray » Thu Aug 27, 2009 1:40 pm

I've been waiting for the X200s to come available in my price range with something more than the Celeron processor. It appears that day has come, though I may have to accept the awkward 16:10 widescreen.

Can someone confirm the exact weight of this model 7465CTO with the 4-cell battery?
Lenovo makes claims of 2.5 pounds, but from past experience, I am skeptical.

If Lenovo says it weighs 2.5lbs with the 4-cell then that is what it weighs.

The X200s is not a 16:9 screen.

Unfortunately, Lenovo doesn't say it so clearly, and I'm not about to spend $1K + on a machine I can't examine in a retail setting, only to find out that the weight claim does not apply. The X60s/X61s had a wide variation in weight depending on the display panel included.

Does anyone have this machine (1280x800) and a scale?

Typically the weight varies mostly with the battery. The larger the battery, the more it weighs. In the tabook it says with the four-cell battery it weighs from 2.43lbs. I'd guess about 2.5 pounds seems about right.

Unfortunately, I haven't had the pleasure of ownership that I assume comes with an X200s. However, I did own an X40 for several years. The claimed weight was 2.7 lbs. I can confirm that an X40 with a 4 cell battery, no wifi adapter and only the on-board RAM, did, in fact, weigh 2.7 lbs. A machine with a 4 cell battery, wifi adapter and upgraded RAM weighed about 2.8 lbs. I'd say that was more of a realistic configuration.

So, unless they are bending the truth even more, I'd guess an X200s, reasonably configured with the lightest battery weighs in around2.5 lbs. Remember 45 grams is 1/10 of a pound.

One thing I found out with T4x machines is that the same part from different manufacturers may vary in weight significantly. For instance, LCD panels of the same resolution can vary by more than one ounce, an optical drive can vary by even more. This can add up across all the parts that make up a computer; LCD, wifi adapter, optical drive, hard drive, memory sticks, etc. I found that T4x machines of the exact same model/configuration could vary by several ounces.

So, it's actually tough for Lenovo to say exactly how much a machine will weigh. It'd be interesting to hear back from some X200s owners on their actual weights.
