R60 (9457-7GU) - Can I upgrade this to a Core Duo?

#1 Post by virge » Fri Aug 28, 2009 12:13 am

Original description: Celeron M 420(1.6GHz), 512MB RAM, 60GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel 950, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, IEEE 1394, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

I've just bought this machine and am waiting for it to arrive. Doing a search here, it seems like some people have been successful in upgrading the CPU. Some posts have mentioned the need for a Rev. 3 motherboard others have not. Can someone with experience comment on this?

Also, any recommendations for a good value CPU would be appreciated. I don't need anything really fast--mostly looking for the benefit of better battery life.

On a site note: I have an SXGA+ panel on the way as well. It seems like this is simple swap and no other parts are needed for this upgrade. Please correct me if that's incorrect! I've never worked on a T6/R6 series before.

You should be able to do any regular Yonah or Merom CPU like a T2400 or T7200 because the R60 was offered with them. I don't know about the variants like a T2050 or T5300. I just tried to upgrade my R60e to a T5200, hoping primarily to get speedstep, but it was a no go. The cheapest way to get them is usually through auctions on eBay, if you can catch one where everyone's napping. Right before I bought my T5200 there was a T5500, which should work with the R60e, priced at around $5 I think with free shipping, but got no bids. I guess you got to look at the right time I guess.

As for the screen, it should be a straight swap. The R60 uses the same inverter and cable regardless of the screen. Good Luck.

I have an R60 9457-Y1X with Core Duo T2500, so I'd say a definite YES.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

RBS and FredGavin -- Thanks for confirming the LCD and CPU swap possibilities.

T2400 (T2500 was a bit more than I want to pay at the moment) and SXGA+ LCD should be here in a few days. :D
