Dear all,
I’m not sure if this is a common problem, but it is one that has me stumped.
First the basics of my machine:
Notebook - IBM ThinkPad X31
Type - 2672
Model – CXG
Operating system – Windows XP
Wireless - Cisco Systems PCI Wireless LAN Adaptor
I am having major problems connecting to wireless internet – I think this is down to encryption.
I have no problem detecting the devices – I can easily pick up my neighbours’ signals and ones in bars and cafes – but when I click to join the network, it tells me the signal has gone out of range and is no longer available.
I am pretty certain this is down to my system only being set up for WEP encrypted wireless devices (5/10 alphanumeric or 13/26 hexadecimal keys).
When I go further into setting up a wireless device either through Windows or Access IBM, it only gives me the option of entering a WEP key and not a WPA – the check box is there to see but I am not able to check it.
I have been told that WPA is now the normal set-up so my computer is seriously limited.
I know that I can easily change the encryption type on my home wireless, but I am not able to connect at work and in cafes and they are not willing to change the encryption type just for my sake.
Is there anything I can do to resolve this or am I just going to have to put up with it?
Any help or advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance,
Ed

You have the same wireless "b" card that my X31 had. I had the same problem. Here's what it has now:

Works great, has good range and I am using WPA PSK right now as I type.

Re: Can my X31 cope with WPA???
Yes, just download new drivers and do firmware update of the Cisco card. Works for me:
