R40e Max Memory

#1 Post by Black C5 » Fri Aug 28, 2009 8:41 pm

The original memory set up in my TP R40e was 128mb x 2. I upgraded one slot to 512mb and it works fine.

I noticed eBay offering 1gb modules for the R40e machines, which are documented to max out at 1gb. I wrote to the venders about the max memory for the R40e and got two responses:

Ans 1: Upgrade the bios and your machine will recognize 2gb memory.
I checked out the bios update site and none of the updated bios changes mentioned memory changes.

Ans 2: Use only one slot with a 1gb module.
The R40e has two one-bank slots, so it may be possible to use one slot only.

I could upgrade one slot with 512 to max 1gb, but I entertain the hope that 2gb is possible with a modification.

Question: Is it possible to modify the R40e to upgrade memory to 2gb, or is 1gb the only possible option and adding one 512mb card the best solution?

Thanks for your advice - David.

I have been running 2gbs in my R32 by way of two 1gb sticks for some time now and it works fine. IBM originally spec'ed the R32 to max out at 1gb but at that time I don't think anyone was making individual sticks larger than 512mb. I picked up two 1gb sticks for mine and life was great :)

In short, I would be quite surprised if your R40 didn't accept 2gbs.

R40 will accept 2GB any given day, R40e units are VERY tricky.

Thanks for the responses! I did not reply sooner because I was expecting an eMail notification when there was a post and I guess I did not set it correctly when I first set up my forum options. Can't find the setting now...

It sounds like it is possible that my machine will except more that 1 gb of memory. I am not sure what "VERY tricky" means, but I read in AJ's links that some of the units will not always recognize all of the installed memory and that four chip sticks may be more successful.

I am going to give a 1gb stick along with my 512 mb stick a shot and will report back what I discover.

Thanks again - David.
